A clothing guide for those new to Southampton

Moving to the UK is an exciting step, but it can also be daunting. Whilst there's a lot to think about, like what to pack and what documents you'll need, it can be easy to forget about your wardrobe. 

UK weather is very unpredictable, with cold winters and a random week-long heatwave in April. But don't worry, we've put together a guide for you to follow so you're prepared for all occasions.

Layering is key!

You know, when you're a kid, and your parents say, "Are you sure you don't need a jacket?" Well, in this case, you probably will. It's important to have clothing that can be layered because the UK weather is renowned for being unpredictable. When you dress in layers, you can adapt to different temperatures while also being ready for any unanticipated rain. A lot of classrooms will be well heated throughout the winter season too, so layering can help you stay warm outside and stay at a comfortable temperature while you learn.

Checklist:

✅ A couple of breathable, lightweight T-shirts

✅ A variety of sweaters or cardigans

✅ A waterproof jacket or coat

✅ Fluffy socks (to keep you cosy in winter)

Packing the right equipment can help you stay dry and comfortable. Your best friend will be a reliable, portable umbrella. It's essential to spend a bit more money on this one, as you'll need one that's sturdy and can endure strong winds. 

To keep your feet dry and protected from puddles and heavy rain, make sure you bring a pair of waterproof boots or shoes. There's nothing worse than accidentally stepping in a big puddle, and you have to walk around with soggy socks all day!

Clothing by season

Spring/Autumn - Pack breathable, light clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, lightweight jackets and trousers. In these changing temperatures, you can be guaranteed a warm day with unexpected winds and rain!

Summer - UK summer can range from warm temperatures to mild, cloudy days. For comfort in the sun, bring shorts, T-shirts, light dresses, and breathable materials.

Winter - UK winter can be chilly and wet, so be sure to pack layers of warm clothing, sweaters, scarves, caps, gloves and a thick coat. To keep your feet toasty, don't forget to carry warm socks and boots.
