Get connected during your time at halls

You will have access to two Wi-Fi networks during your time at UoS halls: eduroam and SOTON-IoT. The Wi-Fi network you choose depends on which device you are attempting to connect.

Eduroam

Eduroam is used to connect most of your devices and is also the primary network you will use on campus. The kinds of devices that can be connected to eduroam are listed below:

• Smartphones
• Tablets/ iPads
• Laptops

When connecting to eduroam for the first time on a new device, you will be prompted to log in. Your username and password are the same as your university Microsoft account, with your username being your full university email address.

If you have friends visiting from another university, they can log in using their university email address and password, no matter which university they are from. If they have previously logged in at their university, they should connect automatically. This is because eduroam is a higher education roaming service used across the vast majority of university campuses.

SOTON-IoT

Some devices are unable to connect to eduroam because they lack the required interface to log in. The kinds of devices that should instead be connected to SOTON-IoT are listed below:

• Smart TVs/ TV streaming devices
• Gaming consoles
• Smart speakers
• Personal printers

1. You must first find your device’s MAC address. This is a unique 12-digit code usually found in the device’s settings. For smart speakers and printers, it is sometimes found in the companion app. Note that for devices such as Alexa, the speaker must already be registered to your account on an alternative Wi-Fi network, e.g., home Wi-Fi or 4G to see the MAC address. If you are struggling to find the MAC address, a quick google search may tell you where to find your unique code on your specific personal device.

2. Next, you must follow the link below on a smartphone or laptop connected to eduroam.

After clicking the link …

a) Select that you want to connect to SOTON-IoT

b) Login with your university username (your email without the @soton.ac.uk) and password.

c) Enter the MAC address of your device, and name your device, e.g. Smart TV.

d) Click “Register this Device”, and a password should appear as a green notification at the top of your screen. Note, this password is different from your university password.

3. On the device you wish to connect to SOTON-IoT, click to connect to the SOTON-IoT network as you would any other Wi-Fi network and use the password generated in the previous step.

Wi-Fi Guest

Visitors who are not university students (and therefore cannot access eduroam) can access free Wi-Fi by connecting to Wi-Fi Guest and completing the login process on their device.
